We head to Marlins Park Monday night for the 2017 MLB Home Run Derby, and while it’s a break for the players, the handicapping doesn’t stop for us. Here we’re going to breakdown each player participating in the event and decide who gives us our best chance to make some money during the break.

Marlins Park averages 2.12 homers per game and has produced 89 bombs in 42 games, which is good for 13th in the National League. Needless to say, this is not a small stadium and even with batting practice balls, you have to really hit it well to leave the yard.

Enough talking though, let’s make some money.

Giancarlo Stanton - Giancarlo Stanton is last years Home Run derby champion after he put on possibly the best show ever during the event with 61 shots and made it look effortless at times. Stanton has the track record, the experience playing in this timed event, and 94 of his 232 career homers have come at Marlins Park. He makes this park look small, which is why he’s plus +180 to repeat.

Aaron Judge - Aaron Judge leads the majors with 30 homers, has hit three in the month of July and has broken statcast records with his exit velocity and distance. Judge has 13 homers since June and is possibly the only person who can challenge in Stanton in pure strength. Judge is the current favorite with +165 odds.

Cody Bellinger - Cody Bellinger has hit 14 homers since June and has 25 on the season. Bellinger has quickly established himself as one of the more reliable hitters on the Los Angeles Dodgers and has six games this season where he’s hit two bombs. You can get Bellinger with +500 odds.

Miguel Sano - Miguel Sano has hit three home runs in the month of July and is on pace to have his best power numbers of his young career, as he already has 21 on the season. Sano has been one of the more consistent power hitters this season, as he’s on pace for at least five long balls each month. Sano comes with +700 odds.

Mike Moustakas - Mike Moustakas already has his career high in homers with 25, as he hit 20 or more only twice previously. Moustakas has 12 shots since June and has homered in four of the seven games this month. Moustakas heads into the event with great momentum and comes with +1400 odds.

Gary Sanchez - Gary Sanchez seems like a throw in due to a lack of participation, as he has just 13 homers on the season and has hit 33 in 111 career games. Sanchez isn’t known for his power, but he did hit nine homers in the month of June and does come with +1600 odds if you’re looking for a shot in the dark.

Justin Bour - Justin Bour has 20 homers on the season with two coming this month, and he has an uppercut powerful swing that could do damage in this event. Of course, Bour plays his games in Miami and 31 of his 59 career homers have come at Marlins Park. Bour could be worth a look with +1600 odds.

Charlie Blackmon - Charlie Blackmon has the highest odds to win the Home Run derby, as he’s bringing in +2000 odds. Blackmon plays in a friendly Coors Field and still has just 93 homers in 693 games. Blackmon is a guy who usually hits for average and has topped 19 homers on a season just once in his career.

Honestly, Stanton and Judge are so ahead of the competition that I’m not sure it’s worth betting on anybody else. They are both head and shoulders the stronger, and more pure homerun hitters that it would be an absolute shock if one of them didn’t leave with the trophy. Besides Bryce Harper, Judge and Stanton are the scariest HR threats in the game currently.

Stanton did a great job of pacing himself last year and not overswinging, and you know he wants to put on a show for his home city. Judge is so strong that even if he gets tired in the later rounds, he can muscle some over the wall to advance. Everybody else are good hitters but aren’t exactly home run derby quality when you compare them to the big boys. Maybe Bour is worth a look if you want a real longshot, as he is playing in his home park and has this powerful uppercut swing that can be deadly when timed right.

It may be the safe picks, but I have a hard time making a case for anyone outside of Judge and Stanton.
